is it normal for the playback of a swf to be much much slower in a browser than in the flash test environment??
- smoothblend0
sure...most people have shit computers...plus bandwidth is not an issue when your testing.
cheers

sometimes it's the other way around. seriously.
- imakedesign0
hmm.. i meant testing it locally on my own computer (the same as the tests in flash)

the stuff i'm currently working on is much slower in the flash preview ( i really have to set the quality to low) than it's on my browser locally and online on a test server. quite odd actually.

Testing in the Flash IDE will be faster than in a browser.
Likewise viewing a swf by double-clicking it will be faster than viewing in a browser.

it's normal for playback to slow in a browser- it has to do with rendering and layers and shit
- Solid0
Rabbatski - that is odd/interesting - is it really code-heavy?
- rabattski0
yep. quite some code, a couple of loaded movies, shared libs etc. the speed difference is really incredible. about twice as slower as in a browser.

Optimize, if your code is written clean and the photos are optimize there should not be any performance issues. As well, make sure that all the data that is being displayed in a frame is 100% loaded this will help playback on the net.

saying that there should not be any performance issues is not really true. yes, there shouldn't be huge "issues" but to say that there won't be any impact is just not correct.

Flash is about 15-20% slower in the browser than in the development or standalone environment. I have done may tests with a lot of different browsers and tweens/code/etc.
These tests are old, but they take into account load time before it calculates fps....
Try these:

I talked with a macromedia representative at FlashintheCan and he verified the problem...
- uberdesigner0
it also varies between browsers- ie faster than firefox and so on
