I need to make some backdrops for an exhibition stand, 1 by 3 meters.
Does anyone have any tips on designing for large print? To stop things looking so empty when printed please?

well don't make the mistake of having that in 300dpi since you will be killing your cpu and it's not necessary at sizes like that.

I will make it at 300dpi but at 1/4 size

on the artistic side: try to keep it abstract and not too hard on contrast. if people are standing really near it (and in front of it for others) it is better to have something abstract (a texture/pattern/blurred landscape or whatever) so people still enjoy it upclose and don't need to stand back a lot to see it all.
if you need to put logo's on it, try to calculate at which height they should appear. quite important.
oh, and lay it all out in illy if you can.
goodluck.

get a video projector and plug it into your monitor, find a white wall and project your desktop onto it, adjust it until it's roughly your final size - work it at 100%. Also work on the basis of long distance, and close up, a nice bold design with some small detail works best.
