One question to you catalans. Do you think it is possible to find a job without speaking catalan here? I haven't tried to find a job till now (living here since 1 and half years) but i am thinking about it! friends told me that its hrd to find anything without speaking catalan.
true?
- CaP0
well, it depends. basically, if your job has to do with speaking to public/clients, then speaking catalan could be a must. but if you're "indoors", then i don't think it's impossible. i have some german and italian friends working here who don't speak it.
but don't worry, you'll get it fast if you try.
and... you've been living here for a year and a half without working? wow! nice holidays...
- VinceSoonInB0
Well. No holiday at all. I have the luck that i can work for german clients from here. So i had a lot of work to do. people were at the beach were even asking me if i am from ireland because of my pale skin!!! hahaha. No. i want to get more connected to the city and for that i am thinking of working here...

catalan is easy to learn, there are free lessons by la Generalitat www.gencat.net and you can search for free books at the library...
if you're planing to stay, why not learn the language?
=)adeu
- paraselene0
you should definitely learn the language if you're living there. it will enhance your enjoyment of the city and the people. i imagine you'd expect the same of any visitor to your home town.
and as for the work, it really depends. small, local design firms are going to be run by local people. even if you're an "in-office" worker, that office may well be a catalan-speaking workplace.
good luck! and enjoy. i'm jealous.
