What's the best, most reliable external firewire HD brand? I've heard horror stories about LaCie, they seem to be all that apple stores carrie besides Maxtor.

LaCie are probably the best. Had mine for 3 years no prob, but you should still back up yuur backup. But you wont listen and you'll learn the hard way just like i did and probably everyone else :)

have a 250gb Porsche LaCie
been running straight for 6 months now without any problems, and mind you i use it as a music server and backup so it transfer data both ways constantly

maybe it's a myth but do a search for "LaCie" on newstoday.
i see a lot of people got duds.

people here wonder why their external LaCie HD don't work anymore after they drop it on the floor and what not..
but it's all the same shit inside any HD..it's the way you treat it that counts

LaCie: hands down! we run a small farm of lacies': firewirl800; usb, firewire(1394)400; it can connect to just about anything!
love them!

I got a dodgy brand i've never heard of for the enclosure, really cheap and i haven't had any problems yet ... but I do have the fear

I bought the box and HD separately, works also fine

Have 3 LaCies..no problems
Remember if you are doing backup right... it should truly be a backup of stuff that still exists on another drive.... then its (less) of a big deal if the drive dies.
If you arent keeping the stuff on your main drive, then its not really a backup...its just a another storage drive...living dangerously...You've gotta assume any hard drive will die (today!) with total data loss...

Just get an external closure and pop a harddisk instead of going for these branded stuff that cost more but do not guarantee durability.
Go for Sarotech if you want an expensive one.

LaCie's are quiet (no fan), and they spin down when not in use.....and they have a blue light! :)

spongebob, i've considered the separate enclosure deal. that's a good option? one thing i like about the LaCie is the rock solid enclosure design. maybe just get a LaCie then?
