It's not that big of a dilemma, if you don't get business based on your web portfolio, then don't show any work. Doesn't seem like a big quandry to me...

I'm a furniture designer, so in some regards, I can understand where your friend is coming from. I think the difference is, industrial design is a much more closed practice where there's a select group of companies and manufacturers who you work with - on the whole, company A knows what company B is up to, and vice-versa.
I can't speak for your situation, but I find graphic design to be a much more universal practice, where anyone from an individual doctor to a major corporation can request your a services - and I believe having your site freely available to show any of these potential customers your work is always a plus.
After all, aren't your services of interest because of your previous work? I'm interested in someone's work because of what I've seen their abilities - looking at a bio or cv, probably isn't going to get me quite as hyped up. And, in this ever more impatient world, I think it's to your benefit to show your work for everyone to see.
If they still want a similar site, I think a good designer, and I think you are, can convince them to go in the most beneficial direction, and not the most treaded.

(May 10 05, 06:22)I'm never happy with my work, some people said that an artists/designers or whatever are never happy with their own work, i agree with that in some ways (maybe thats just me).
I'm doing one page folio the now to show my work which i'm never happy with, the reason i do it is because if i dont show my work, there wont be any jobs coming in for me. maybe thats just my view.
