the entire spectrum of human emotion can give pleasure, and joy would not exist without despair.
the variety and texture of our feelings is what we live for, and they would be useless without contrast and richness.

well i think it's clear "happiness' is highly suubjective. But you could say that, if you wanted to be logical and banal about it, that - happinees is an emotional state you are attracted towards. And that indeed manic depressives are "attracted" to loneliness, isolation etc. And that, you can say, they are "happy" to be that way.
Indeed you could say, depression can only be judged from behaviour by outsiders, whilst emotionally the person is happy. Maybe why many manic depressive are "irritated" when people try to "help" them.

never a truer word typed para.

ta, luv.
kuz, do you remember reading the hunger artist? i think it was that story in particular that made me realise that there is no human motivation apart from hedonism.
the hunger artist achieves pleasure through the pain of self-denial, and, as such, he is as much a hedonist as the letcher or the glutton.
santa teresa de avila sought extasy through abstinence and was thus fulfilling her baser desires for pleasure perhaps even more wantonly than jezebel.
interesting, anyway...

(May 10 05, 04:20)Yes it would. It just so happens that God is a vindictive so and so and decided we needed depair.
I know this, because he's still standing behind me, and he's still playing the same game.

haha don't you hate it when god just hangs about like that? the worst kind of stalker, you should try and get an injunction placed on Him.
- paraselene0
or you could have him take lessons from kelpie. be more of a lone ranger, y'know. not quite so clingy.
- Kuz0
yeah para.
There was this Kafka quote that i can't remember that i wanted to type in moth's dream about god thread
sumfink like
"man has nothing. nothing he can call his own. no solid ground to plant his feet . for him is the eternal moment of suffering. And so he has so much less than the circus trapeze artist who is at least hanging by a thread."
can't remember the quote - do you know what i mean?
- Kuz0
man Kafka was awesome, thanks for reminding me of the hunger artist!
- Kuz0
I don't like the Epicureanist term of hedonism tho. fills me with despair. And as Kafka said - don't despair, not even because you don't despair.
- paraselene0
"there IS hope. an infinite amount of hope. just not for us."
i'm not placing that quote that you posted straight away. maybe it'll come to me later.
gotta love that kafka tho, hey?
yeah, hedonism is pretty bleak.

Happiness is the abundant life...
"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly"
Jesus (John 10:10)

happiness is managing to get to the toilet before pissing yourself.
more so if you're wearing light brown trousers.
