what do we do?

I've got a bit of a situation on my hands here:

My partner and I did a shitload work for a startup line of hair care products. Design, branding, illustration... you name it... and did it for a MORE THAN reasonable price.

Time after time, the client has held us up for time, delayed the process with nonsense, cancelled meetings as we were driving to them, and expected us to turn everything around in a day... next to impossible for a couple of guys that have full time jobs.

Anyhow, it started off as a pretty decent relationship... we as designers felt we had the freedom to tell this guy whatever we wanted and were comfortable that we were making the right moves for his products' success.

Without getting too in depth, he brought another partner in. He expressed his opinions, but thankfully, the new person's views were the same as our own, thus the project stayed on course.

So, yesterday I learn that yet ANOTHER partner (primarily of a marketing background) is being brought into the mix, and of course, he's a designer. The client has suggested we work "closely" with him and "get him up to speed" so he can do changes/work when we're unavailable. I sense we're being fazed out....

what should we do? We had him sign a contract that says we own all the artwork...and he's said that we could "tell him what the project is worth to us" and deal with him there. I'm thinking of asking for a $$ amount + a percentage of profits. is that a usual type thing? I'm not giving him raw artwork for nothing.... not after he signed that contract.

Now... keeping in mind that he's a steady client who, unfortunately, doesn't have much of a budget (but gives us pretty cool stuff to work on)...

    any tips/suggestions??

thanks, and sorry for the novel.

the contract is signed...THEIR hands are tied...you pretty much just need to enforce it. though, it might be a little tough on your relationship with them...

Have a meeting, reinforce the idea you'd like to close that phase of the project and deliver the ID package before you hand anything over.

this is where the contract gets tricky. make sure it doesn't have a loophole.

good luck. designers with business mind always win, well i hope.
