does anyone here have any feedback to give on hiring a personal trainer, wether it be good or bad? i sit around in front of my computer too much and i really want to get back into shape. i go to the gym but i never really know what to do with the equipment so i end up going on the eliptical machine for 30 minutes and that just isn't doing anything for me.

Simple. If you want a good trainer you have to fist become their friend and do what they say.
Also I visit the gym first and check out what trainer is really helping their client. Some trainers say:
Do 3 sets of 12 reps. then they leave and go chat with their friends until you go look for them.

the gym i go to now is owned by the city of calgary and they offer 10 sessions for $360 which is affordable for me, other gyms charge around $1200.
that is a good point about trainers who don't spend all their time with you though... that would really piss me off

go to the gym and scope out a girl trainer who is in better shape then you.
sit her down and ask her questions like,
-how long she's been training
-her certificates
-her training philosophy (sp?)
-will she create you a personal program for you and your goals
-will she make you out a diet
-what is her degreetreat it like a client treats you with design.
my gf is a trainer and before a client hires her t hey usually put her through the 3rd degree. you want a trainer who will treat you like a person and legitimately cares about you getting into better shape. you don't want one who is just going to take your money and waste an hour of your time not teaching you anything new.
good luck.

does anyone have any good links for how to use the wieght machines in the gym? all the equipment in there is so intimidating...
- todelete__20
all i know about the machines at the gym is not to put your wang in between the weights.

just ask people, if the machines look tricky, and ask what muscle group they are working. I would use free weights vs. machines.

this may apply to machines, but mostly if you want to know how to tackle different muscles.
cute too

thanks mogwai! that's just what i was looking for! :)

if chips were heavier my upper body would be fucking huge.

that site gives you a good idea of what excersises work which muscle groups...but i would suggest that you have a session or two with a trainer first if you don't know how to use the machines or perform certain excersises...you can seriously hurt yourself if you do something wrong
sorry if that sounds discouraging...but i can't sleep through the night because my shoulders are fucked up from a weight lifting injury...not really one specific incident, just started too young and messed up some growing tendons/ligaments

good advise instatok, i think i will hire a personal trainer for one session ($40) because i actually can't afford all 10 sessions right now. knowing me i would probably rip an arm off if i did this by myself...
