Just a general question about regarding hourly freelance work. . .
If asking for a deposit, how do you usually determine that? I assume you would base it on the scope of the project. Also, will this deposit go towards the hourly payment?
I already searched for this here, and didnt come accross anything.
Thanks in advance

I don't charge hourly, but depending on price I usually request 25%- 50% upfront.

Have too many horror stories regarding clients dropping out due to lack of funds, change of direction.
Try and get a 25-30% deposit, clients are always keen to talk about deadlines, so when you give them the deadline, put down that the timescale is from the date that you receive all the content and deposit.

Yes, but working hourly, do u base that 25-30% on what you estimate the final cost may be? And does that deposit go towards this hourly payemnt?

get 50% up front
- radar0
yeah, estimate what you think the final cost to be and charge what percentage you want, and it would deduct from the final bill.

50% always.

I give a flat rate, based on an hourly estimation with 50% in my hand before I even think about their project...there is n other way!

i ask 50% but some people think this is too high
people around here lean toward 30%
- radar0
I think 50% is ok if its like a $500-$1000 job. Over a grand I usually do 25-30%.

I had that happen to me. None payment after a job. I'm currious if I have to go to court. What are the rights to the money?
- radar0
DO you have clients sign anything Yurimon?
- yurimon0
Radar
They paid me for work before. It was agreed that they commition me to do the work. I finished the work. They had possession of it.

If you got zeo for a web design job, and got screwed, here's an idea....put some gay porn on the homepage and see how long until you get your $$.
My bet is el rapido!

Yurimon, if they didn't sign anything it would be hard, and I would mess with small claims court unless it's a substancial amount of money.
Thats the great thing about web, if they don't pay, you can yank the site.

Yeah but the money is better
- versa0
30% on high-paying/large scope projects
50% on smaller stuff

It was kiosk signage. It over 4g's I did a good design it would be hard for them to do anything original. I'll have to see about it. They got wierd on the price but this guy approved my invoice. The CEO started pinching pennies.

like to use a 30, 35, 35 percent pay scale. up front, on design decision, upon completion respectively.
Does not matter how much it is for, the more money the more important it is to get a good chunk up front.
And always remember your cancellation fees in your contract

letters how much is the cancelation fee?
