n00b post warning... please be gentle.
What seems to be the consensus when pricing for a logo design (if the client is not short of cash and the logo will probably be used on a variety of merchandising)?
Do you charge a flat fee for the time spent on the job, or do you price higher for a ‘buy out’ fee if it looks like they are going to get some serious use out of it?I’ve just spent the last hour searching the PBS and the best part of the morning scouring google. Really in the dark about this one. Any advice would be appreciated.

it's definately a higher charge because the usage rights are completely transferred to the client.
this book would help you:

The only times that I've not given the client complete rights are when they really don't have any money and for some stupid reason I agreed to do it anyway.
They were lessons hard learned. They always steal the logo and do what they want with it.
Charge what its worth. Remember that might be a ton to changes to the logo and build that into the price.
Might also make sense for you to consult the Graphic Artists Guild handbook.
