hey,
does anyone have experience in testing artwork to see how it is going to look on newspaper, the whole half tone thing, etc.what is the best way to do it.
cheers

dunno about testing - but i usually boost the shit out of my pics with the curves adjustment tool in PS. make sure the contrast is quite high as that paper just SOAKS it up...
and i always leave them as RGB in the file - then send to pdf with colours converted to CMYK - keeps them a bit brighter i have found.

i'm assuming you're doing b/w work? color might be a bitch.
i always make sure my tones are nice and even and then i let the newspaper do their preflight magic.
i'm more of a "cross my fingers" designer than a tester.

i guess the biggest problem is, they want alot of text in a small space on one section of the ad, and i want to see how it will turn out, readable or not. I'm saying its going to be an issue, but i guess it would be good to see how it will turn out.

drop blacks to about 80%
no inks to more than 260 total
33% dot gain

just don't go too small with your type, and keep kerning/leading a little open so your type doesn't get muddy.

if you're concerned about type being illegible. you might want to find some examples of bad newspaper ad typesetting and show your client or boss.
tell them you don't think it will fit.
NOBODY reads the small print in a newspaper ad. anything under 10pt is not going to add any value.

whats worse that its small type reversed (cut out) on an image. so eh, who knows how it will turn out then.
anyone know much about splash rips, can they emulate any thing like that?

if it's reversed out i wouldnt let it be any smaller than 10pt. it'll go to mud otherwise...
