OK, I have decided to take the plunge and go freelance...
Graphic/Web designer!
I am currently in full-time employement but I am still within my 6 month probation period so only a weeks notice to give, anyway, apart from the obvious (find potential clients) does any body have any advice or tips, etc that I can do now before I hand my notice in. I suppose I want to test the water first...
Any positive thoughts would be much appreciated!!!
By the way, I am based in the South West (UK) and live not far from Bristol...
Cheers!!!

From what I've heard, Bristol's teeming with freelancers like any other city I guess, but good luck anyway.

Never turn a job away, it could always lead to bigger things.
Make sure your finances are toighter than a ducks butt

Go part-time for a while before you go completely freelance, if you can. Then you won't have to stress about paying the rent and you can take some time to organise you freelancing.
It doesn't have to be either one or the other.

1. Get 2 or 3 good, steady clients. Small agencies that don't staff in-house what you specialize in.
2. Save every freakin' dime you get from your real job before you quit.
3. Don't get a loan.
4. Don't buy a bunch of PowerBook laptops and 23" monitors on a maxed out credit card.
5. Quit job, but do it nicely - they will still use you for freelance work if you leave respectfully.

someone said never turn down a job... that's true in most cases, but sometimes you gotta watch your back and not get screwed by some cheap ass who wastes your time and gets you nowhere. look into the clients if you can. you never know who lurks in the shadows waiting to suck at your creative juices.
