Hi, I have to convert a ppt presentation to flash - the text has to sync to recorded speech - do I need loads of small sound bites or one huge file to play and pause?

depends on whatever you think is the best most efficient solution. How long the presentation is, and how often you plan to play/pause

Well it shouldn't have to pause at all really, I suppoose the most important thing is timing the sound with the text, I've never done this before so just wondering about best methods etc...

depends on what you want to do exactly. how easy is it going to be to ue just one file or multiple files in terms of the syncing. Lot of busy work you have in front of you.
I could show you a few I have done if you want...?

just the .swf it's not embedded properly. Flash will compress the hell out of any sound file for you.

third party tools have been around for a while that will allow u to run through yr sound file and put in markers at spec points you want things to happen

this tool will go through yr file and output an array of data. the full package allows u to put in the markers
