is it important to buy "apple" memory for upgrade.. or is it the same to buy cheaper off-brand memory?

I'd stick w/Apple everything if you can... unless Apple doesn't make it (external harddrives - printers etc).

no it's not important.
and why is anything else as apple "cheaper off brand"? wtf?
do you really think apple has it's own memory factory? don't think so.

all that counts is the technical specs(RAM type and speed rating). You can get exact Apple spec RAM from crucial.com cheaper...but make sure you read all of the details (down to the speed, not just RAM type). In any case they all guarantee it will work for the computer listed, so you can always send it back.
I've bought RAM from places like Mac Zone earlier that met Apple spec but a technically lower speed rating than the original RAM (222 vs 322 or something) ...but I think it didnt affect performance.
