i'm about to do a website that will need to be in both english and german. when working with the german text, some extended characters will not render correctly and i have to manually enter ASCI equivalants. is there a better way to automate this?

a quick google points to this. it may help you start building a localized website.

i know xml and scripting to make your life easier, but alas...i've never developed a backend for anything other than english. so, i don't know details.
you may check the w3c site, though...they might also have some info about localization.
good luck, yo.

does php's htmlSpecialCharacters() not sort this out for you?

Short of writing some kind of search and replace script ... ?

--------Sorry - that was in response to UndoUndo's PHP suggestion

Solid's on the right track for what i mean here. the site is gonna be very small and just basic html and css.
i was just looking for a way to automatically replace all the letters like this..
ö to ö
so it will render correct and i wont have to do it all manually.

ö to "ö"

keeps rendering it here, but you get the idea ....
ö to & o u m l

Try this:
http://code.cside.com/3rdpage/us…just dump your raw text in their and "Convert"

or Google for more:

thanks solid. that looks good.
anyone know if dreamweaver or skedit will do that? i'm currently just doing it all in TextEdit, but would upgrade for that functionality.
:-)

Dreamweaver won't do it "out of the box" - but you might be able to find an extension that will automagically search and replace ... if you do let me know :D
- ivan_cook0
solid- will do. that would be golden. seems like it must be a common issue, but it's my first site in multiple languages. maybe someone from montreal can help us out.

On a related note - I hear your moving to NY?
- ivan_cook0
looks that way. actually brooklyn. my lease here is up in July and i gotta move. been in Austin too long. would be nice to find a job / internship up there first though.

you'll eventually end up in TO - I have a feeling about these things ;)
But in the meantime ...
NY should be a pretty exciting change of pace - the stage doesn't get any bigger than that :D
