i quite liked the simple but clean approach of tDR on the Warp DVD..

the Hellboy menu isnt bad from Memory
your right about it tho, could be a demand for tighter DVD menu design
ive made a couple and its not all that hard really using DVD Studio Pro

Umm,
the Functionality is not my main concern and the software isn't my concern either. All I'm looking for is a very good design in a nice composition.
I remember one of the 007 DVD menu was pretty cool. Lot's of 3D objects and transitions to each catergories.
Not that it's my favorite, but it's one of the well done menu design. I think.
Oh, "elf" was pretty claver design too.

The Star Wars DVDs have some amazing things going on in the menus. no design revolution, but all those extra films that play when you select anything -- pretty amazing.

I have a chemical brothers dvd showcasing a lot of their videos. Dunno who did it, but it's pretty impressive all the same.

I agree with vormburo - the Warp DVD menu is very well done - very minimal.
Also check out the the Smugglers DVD it is similar to thier website navigation - clean.

Check out the Specialten DVD - available in Magma, Borders, HMV etc - I think it was issue 7 that had a totally amazing interface.
