I'll never quite get my head around mac OSX so maybe you can help me out:
If you have a CD with pictures or images (not albums created in iPhoto, just pics) - what is the easiest way to browse through them? I'm only looking for a way to flip through them with my arrow keys, but I don't want to have to import 400 pictures into the lightbox or iPhoto.
Thanks./L

use preview directly from the cd

The only way I can do that is to highlight all of the files and open them, all the pics then end up in the lightbox and I have a first verion ibook so it takes forever before I can actually start browsing. Isn't there an easier way, like on the peecee? :)

400 photos might take a good long while to load, especially from a CD so you might have to do it in a couple batches. Just drag 'n drop onto the Preview icon to get it all going.

the preview icon? is that in iPhoto? I don't actually want to preview them, I want to view them in fullscreen, sized to fit.
And while I'm at it, how do you maximize a window? Is there a way to get resizing handles all the way around the window and not just that tiny corner?
Thanks for your time, I'm an idiot, i know.

Got Photoshop?
If so... use the "browse" option.

No no no... he means just select your cd, or its contents, and drag and release over the icon for preview, and all will be opened,.... or just do this: open your cd,, command + "a" to select all its contents, then ctrl click on one of them (or right click) and where you have the open with choice, choose preview... you will be able to vew them full scale, plus see thumbnails on the right...

Ok, i get it. That's what I've been doing. But on my pre-WW1 mac it takes ages just to do that. And photoshop is not an option either - I asked for a simpler way to do it.
Also, I'm just now starting to realize that there is no way of maximizing windows on a mac (!). Can anyone point me to a nice little snipplet of software that let's you do just that? Come on, somebody else must have thought about it..?
Thanks for all your input though.

why would you ever want to do that? non-maximizing windows so they cover the entire screen real estate is one of the simple beauties of the mac interface. unless you want your mac to be a windows system deep down...

people... Preview is a stock OSX app for quickly previewing images, pdfs etc etc.
its in your Apps folder, a definite must for your dock. Then you can drag and drop groups of images onto the icon and it will create a multipage preview.
i also sometime just open the folder window in columns view.. with "show preview" enabled in options... then use the down arrow key to flip through images.

completely agree timg. preview is fantastic and previewing in finder w/ "show preview" enabled is even faster, albeit w/ smaller images. allows you to preview just about any file type as well...

Easiest way to do this would be to open a new window in Column view, and extend the colomn as far as it will go, but keep two columns. When you navigate to the CD, your pictures will preview in the right hand column, and you can just arrow down one at a time and get a small preview.

when an image is loaded, hit the maximize button (rightmost of the 3)...window expands to show all of the image.
another approach to viewing...get iView Media or iView Media Pro... does browsing, cataloguing with labels/sets, batch renaming, gallery generation, contact sheets, annotation, etc... (like ACDSee but nicer). Does take a little while to catalog a folder...but once it is done...very powerful.
