I'm learning a bit of Flash in my spare time - someone pointed me in the direction of this SWF Decompiler thing... I've not used it yet, but it seems to pick apart flash files - which must be a good way for the trainee flash builder?
Any idea anyone?

why?
there are plenty of resources to learn flash from on- and offline.
it's a lot better than decompiling code of which one is never sure you get the whole shebang and without having to spend hours to wade thru other people's codes.

I was just asking! I've not used it yet, just reading the spiel just now... not sure if it looks useful or not...
How can one learn how to do cool things like this:
Any good resources?

once you learn the program and actionscript, you'll learn the possibilities.

Never ceases to amaze me how many coders get precious about their code. They could learn a bit from type designers, I don't see them getting arsey about dishing out free fonts all over the place.
Lighten up! Information wants to be free.

Learn flash the right way, learn the basics and then build on those.
No fast shortcuts.
Decompilers are stealing.

by learning how to use flash from resources like actionscript.org etc and books.
do you really think you will know what to do with the code even if you pinch it other than cloning the site?

(Mar 16 05, 04:55)The difference is stealing code is just like ripping off a design.
Using a font becomes stealing when you use it in the same way that you have seen.

code is free the_seperatorist you can get it here on a daily basis and even guys like robert penner hand out really nice advanced stuff. doesnt mean you have to steal it
- UndoUndo0
or you rip off the font and dont pay the fee, charging it out to your clients. I'm sure fontographers wouldn't be happy about that

yea when i first saw what a Flash decompiler could do, I felt that nothing really is safe anymore in Flash.. just my opinion
a bit offtopic, but, does anyone here think that flash will die out, like Director? one of my lecturers uses that as an excuse to not teach Flash and AS for an Interaction Design unit we are doing, and now were stuck doin fkn lingo in Director... i think this justification is just weak...
- UndoUndo0
not really, it may develop into other apps like Flex where yr skills are still very applicable. Director and flash may well come together one day

I had to use Director in University too. I never understood why. It would have made more sense to do the things we were doing in Flash.
I recently tried director again, I couldnt remember how to do anything. I think I am done with that program.

Director is dead basically.
- nRIK0
yea its not like lingo helps.
i mean, weve been taught alot of code, in C#, Java, C++, and then going into Director with this lingo stuff... i just dont like it much... but we'll see over the coming weeksI just dont understand why not Flash... silly people.
- UndoUndo0
director is more advanced than flash and has true 3d. until flash has that director will live on
- nRIK0
Director is dead basically.

(Mar 16 05, 05:07)pretty much what everyone i know thinks... and so why learn it?
justfying by saying "oh, Flash is GOING to die" and we may as well learn something thats already dead, fkn annoys me...

I don't condone it, but you can easily 'Reverse Engineer' a Flash file. Grab the thing and turn it into its own .fla. Its for sure a violation of intellectual property and all that.
*Turns on Daft Punk
'Grab it - Find it - Crack it' da da da da da da da

Weak? What a lame dork! Flash is bigger than Director ever was and keeps growing. Some people still believe SVG + DOM JS will compete with Flash. Yeah, right. They still think Flash is just a vector format.
I think the battle is Flash vs w3c standards now and will result in tight flash integration with browser.
- nRIK0
yes, the 3D features i suppose is the only reason why I would use Director over Flash
