I almost bought a house in Asbury Park in 2001, but there were waaaaaay too many crackhouses, seriously.

ha.
Ok if you don't care to listen to it i'll tell you that this is the story of a bad neighborhood that has been revitalized by the influx of gay people.I found this to be very interesting.
Time and again it seems that just like artists, the gay sub culture tends to be responsible for turning run down neighborhoods into prosperous trendy communities.

and then driving out the people who originally lived there because they cannot afford to pay the higher rents that result from the gentrification of the neighborhood.

The influx of gays into Asbury Park has been happening at least since 2000.
What the town really needs is a revitalized business district, which has been underway. Roughly half of the downtown buildings were abandoned and derelict when I visited. I did an illustration for Dwell in 2001 of a new multipurpose downtown development whose intent was to bring people downtown.

Yeah, the towns around Asbury Park are much better off. All of the lower income people have flocked to Asbury Park and they will be priced out.

the same happened to alot of neighborhoods in NYC, most recently Williamsburg, which was a drug-infested hellhole 10-15 years ago and now it's something like the upper east side.

it's a very interesting social trend indeed.

Williamsburg is much more bohemian than the upper east side ever was but it's a much better place than years ago.
