one question: why include so many people links to the xhtml and css validator on the bottom of their sites? trend or rule or ... ? hmm ...

Because, if it's a portfolio site, it filters the good from the bad.
Another reason I would probably do it is to raise awareness that there are actually standards. I've never had a client even ask about the quality of my coding.
