this problem and the solution on that link is a good example of why the web isn't ready for xhtml yet.

yeah, browsers are a little behind the code
- AMFA0
shit... i swear i tried that....
it worked thanks
i use xthml and css for all my sites and this is the first time i ran into a problem like that....
an easy solution that validates and i overlooked apparently...
- AMFA0
thanks again mate

i don't know why some people get a hardon about validating... to me it's just as lame as in 98 when everybody was putting those stupid "HTML 3.0" buttons on their websites.
or was it 2.0 back then?
- function820
Get Netscape 1.0 buttons were hot too
- lifeinbinary0
monica bellucci was also hot. still is.

dude, i dont give a shit to say: hey it's validated, im cool...
its for debugging.
If it validates, my css (or xhtml) is correct, and it is a browser problem. (so find a hack or change the code)
if it doesnt validate: im an idiot and forgot something, or the code is wrong.
- AMFA0
i never used to validate, and it took me 2x longer to code a page cause quirks would keep popping up but i didnt know where to look.
now if it validates (or not) i know where to start
- function820
the only downside is that even if it validates, that doesn't mean it works

i can code an html/css page with no xhtml and have it work/look right in ALL the most used browsers. NO xhtml standards tableless coder can say that for themself.

true true (see: my problem that you just solved)
but it is a starting point...
instead of everyone asking: did you forget to close a div, did you mispell something, did you overlap tags, etc, etc.
it's: ok, how to solve this specific problem with css hack, or recode
- AMFA0
abstrak:
ok i believe you.... but there are so many more benefits to tableless that you miss out on...
- abstrakt0
like what? like me being able to view the site on my PDA? or disabled people using it?
people using older browsers certainly don't "benefit", all they get it a simple list of content.
tell me how tableless layouts are a greater benefit than regular layouts?
i don't mean to get all defensive, but this is a sensitive topic for me and i feel strongly that xhtml and/or tableless layouts should not be integrated into most corporate design just yet
