Is the dual 1.8 G5 a lot faster than the new 1.67 G4 Powerbooks?
Not sure which to purchase

well it's still a G5 vs G4. the G5 going to have a faster bus speed which can make a world of difference.
if portablity is a must then....pbook it is.
i'd go G5.

mmmm. was hoping that wasnt the answer.

what do you need the system for? design? video editing? word processor?

i'd go with the laptop because you have 2 computers in one... a portable computer and a desktop computer. a desktop computer is just a desktop.

g4 pbook, even new ones hve 167 mhz bus speed, whereas g5 has ghz busses.
startup time is 3 times faster, much better w/ g5.
but, i bought a powerbook. too tempting.

its mainly for graphics....but i may do some after effects and final cut stuff......but its definately primarily for graphics.

id go with the PB unless you are sure you arent going to be moving it around. you will be very happy with any choice, really.

that's funny because i had the exact same question except a dual 2.0
currently have a G4 400 and the choice for me is between:
2.0 because it had more frontside bus, comes w/ twice size hard drive and more ram... than the 1.8
and the 1.67ghz 15" w/ superdrive.
prices are similar so it's really tough. both can increase ram but pb only to 2gb while g5 to 8gb. probably wouldn't go past 1gb myself. work with 640 right now and get by just fine. pb comes with bluetooth 2 and airport standard. option on g5. both will run the software fine with obvious speed advantage to the G5.
was reading on mac rumor forums and a few really good points are mentioned... do you value speed? do you want the latest stuff, so g5 cuz no g5 pb any time soon. where do you like to work? on the road or a cafe or at a desk?
it's a really tough choice. g5 is up for an update soon so wait a bit (it's been almost a year since any serious updates to the g5 powermac). pb was just updated so good time to buy.
keep me posted on your decision and how it works out for you. i'm kinda leaning toward pb so i'm not tied to my desk. it will still be a step up from my old computer and do well with the usual graphics programs.
good luck

it will b your only machine? i think liek motion and soem newer programs only run on the g5

thanks all.
yeh im currently on a g4 466 and its sooo slow.....annoyingThe reason i want a pbook is bcos i might me moving back to london and it makes it easier to get freelance work.
And yeh it will be my only computer.
At work i use a p4 2.4gh work and its pretty much fast enough for most of the stuff i do so as long as the pbook is as fast as this ill be happy i think.
