Any full timers here been able ( or willing) to convince your boss to let you work from home. I'm thinking about pitching it to my boss but am still debating the pros/cons.

the biggest con i had. when the alarm goes off at 7:45 you know you only have to go a few feet to your computer, so you hit the snooze a while. next thing you know you get a call at 10am from your boss. so you play it off as if you've been working the whole time. then you have to deal with the telivision and your ps2 (or whatever) calling your name all day. it's nice, but you really have to focus and be dedicated.

i live in NC and work for an agency in Massachusetts.
i telecommute but from an office. i need my work space to be seperate from home life.

That is all too true. I'm feeling the need to move somewhere less expensive, but this commute tether keeps us all tied to the urban centers. The web stuff would be cake, but i'm also worried about the print work i do. I would miss the Phaser 7750...she's fine.

gruntt. what type of office space did you hook up with? something supplied by the agency, shared space with other creatives (those sound cool), or just a storefront with connectivity.. just curious to see how others have pulled this off.
thanks,

zombie- office is supplied by the agency. It's a small one-room office with me and one other designer.
it's right downtown (asheville). pretty sweet gig.

i telecommute about two days a month. that's the limit with my company.
i'm laying out a plan where i telecommute several days a week, but don't expect it to be welcomed with open arms.
the best company benefits of this that i've come up with is lower costs (electricity, phone, paper, etc.) and increased productivity.
employee retention is another, but there's not really an easy way to state that one.

after 1 year of commuting over 1h 15, i negotiated a 2 day a week telecommuting schedule.
i had other offers closer to home but gave my current employer a chance to keep me around, which they did.
i'm still leaving tho ;)

yeah, speaking of which, i haven't seen you there in a while... did you get fired for giving demonstrations again?
:P

I never really worked there, I was just there like everyday. I can see why you made that mistake.

lmao.

Blaw, If I'm not mistaken, you live in Johnstown, PA (my folks are from Summerhill, PA - btw) and commute to Pittsburgh?
I'm planning on pitching a similar situation, but reversed. Maybe one week a month in the office.
Does your company get a tax break for telecommuters?
The retention angle is part of my plan.
I am worried about what Kona mentioned regarding motivation and distractions. The kids will be the hardest part...unless the office is in an outbuilding or garage...
Thanks,

cheers to your folks, zombiewoof! damn good memory you got there, too.
actually, i commute 60 miles north to bellwood which puts me at about 1hr 15min each way. i've been doing that for seven years and i'm nearing the end of my rope.
if i were to receive an offer, my company would most definately hook me up with the schedule i want. how to convince them without threatening to leave?
i hadn't thought of the tax break angle. anywhere i can find additional information on that?

my mangina is so sweet and sexy.
- j_red0
i am in my pajamas still, working from home for a few weeks now. i love it.
- gruntt0
*makes mental note to work the word "mangina" into future conversations.

it looks like there have been several attempts at a US federal bill to give tax incentives to telecommuters
http://www.transoptions.org/teleā¦
but nothing passed yet. (go figure)
Several states have tax breaks, but even that is murky. I read about WA, CO, and MD (where I live) but nothing on PA, nor interstate telework, which i am interested in...

thanks for the research.
