last thing you said is so true. :)
anyways, i don't think it's an 18 choose 2 combination because each connection is the same (a-b = b-a). every single element in the left column can make only 18 connections so the maximum of connections is 18*18=324. however if you would say that both a-b is as unique as b-a than you would have 18*18*2=648 combinations.
you know i just want to know where the hell 1,273,726,838,815,420,339,851,34... comes from.

18!/((18-2)!*2!) is right,. What I've posted before was a permutation calculation not combinations.
