Hello.

Can anyone here tell me if the fastest G5 iMac [1.8GHz Power PC, 600MHz, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Graphics card] will run Maya, and After Effects [not at the same time]?
Would i need to RAM it to the max [2 GB]?

Thank you in advance.

the general rule of thumb is the more RAM the better, i have a 1.8 iMac G5 with 768 and have no problem (i mostly work in photoshop/illustrator and flash though) working in after effects or maya...

im on PB with 1.2 gigs ram i use both they are fine... u dnt need 12 gigs of ram to run it.. if ur doing big renders its nice to have more ram but u could run AE and maya on 512 ram... it would be slow as shit.... but u can run it....

Thank you.
Re. Running Maya: It says on the Maya site that running the software on a machine with an integrated monitor you lose some of the menus functionality [it recommends you run it with another monitor]. Is that the case?

I would go with a Powermac in your case, the new iMac is good, but not for Maya or After effects. The 64mb graphic card in it just don't do the job very well compared a 128 or 256mb in the Powermac..
There is a BIG difference between them when it comes to rendering nurbs and curves

hey Build,you gonna do motion!
great!getting curious already.
btw i use my powerbook for after effects, maxed out the ram and works fine.of course some effects ask a lot of your computer(stroke, motion blur,etc..)

the guy doing the Maya demo at macworld was using a Powerbook to run it.

shouldn't hae any probs w/ that config

PC = XSI.
SOFTIMAGE|XSI 4.2
i am 4.
- mevsthem0
since you are using Mac. I would recommand Lightwave for a iMac not Maya, and lightwave is easier to use and learn then maya. But I would just buy a PC and run XSI like i am.

agree w mevsthem

If you wanna test it you can download the personal learning edition Maya PLE if your set on Maya.

maybe he is just look for a new computer because the old PB is running a little slow!
- mevsthem0
Well the only good 3D mac software for iMac is lightwave, but its not the software its just a tool. Look at Rustboy.com the guy uses low end software that is out of production and is making a short film called just boy. That looks AMAZING!.

i use http://www.formz.com on my iMac G3 and i have no problems with speed or anything even when rendering 150.000+ polygons
Rustboy is using infini-D isn't he?
think i remember reading it somewhere

Rustboy is using infini-D isn't he?
Yes and look at the results hes getting. its not the tool. he is very talented.
- designerror0
yes, very talented indeed!
and he also got the sketches worked out really good before he starts the wireframe work

my powerbook 500mhz runs maya and ae (slow yes) but they still run

I e-mailed alias for you. they said you should be fine, but rendering will go slower so u might wanna get more ram unless you like to wait longer. But the app should run fine.

Thank you all.
