vespa thats exactly how my 'career' has gone - from one agency to the next, a bit of freelance, even working jobs not in design at all just to get some cash - I've had a lot of experience - but at the same time not half as much as I maybe should have for my age! Thus, my career definitely isn't at the point I want it to be even though I feel I've thoroughly 'paid my dues' 'tis the way of things though - we've all been there at some point

FIrst of all I would recommend getting your portfolio site off angelfire

vespa, cool story, but why do you have to mention god? god has nothing to do with it.

-----------------------------well rabattski sometimes you just gotta have faith *insert jaunty guitar strumming here
i know i know, it's faith in yourself rather than faith in some greater entity but when everything's peachy (or you're still a bit pissed from the night before) they seem like one and the same eh?

i totally agree with you, vespa, but you're from a commonwealth country, so it's different.
i mean, i had my work permit all sorted out and they *still* deported my (cute) ass.
it's fine if it's cuba or something and you never plan to make a life there, but i don't like playin' with fire when it comes to the home office. ya dig?
if it's an option, though, definitely take the risky route.

yeh thats in progress - trouble is I've been on such an absolute shite wage for most of the last two years, I'm only just managing to get broadband in now and then I'll be able to buy a domain - I put all that stuff up at work on the sly... managed to buy my own mac so I have it set up in my flat now and I'm working on a new site which I can chuck up in a few weeks (hopefully)

so what drove everyone here to work abroad or otherwise - you reckon you'll still be at it in ten years time or is it more of a long sampler thingy? You can tell I'm having a bad day - grasping for some hope in this bizarre industry!

sound advice, all good I reckon. Depends on each persons situation, how long you want to go for, where etc. etc. Generally though, as with anything, I'd say do your research and have a clear objective otherwise you'll just cane loads of money and go home again. I moved to spain 5 years ago with my spanish girlfriend who used to be my spanish teacher who was teaching me spanish so I could move to spain. So turned out nice!...

JazX: I got one....he did not sound to optimistic about that....maybe I should look for another one.

------------------------------i started getting sprawling-suburb-induced agoraphobia if i found myself alone in the house at 3.00 in the afternoon and realised i needed to move to a big city or i'd go mentalist.
i'd been to london on holiday and the memory that stood out was that you could walk down the high street wearing nothing but a bin bag and wellies and no-one would look twice, whereas in perth at the time it was socially illegal to wear anything but jeans and a blue "faux-denim" cotton shirt. i also have a highly developed phobia of shopping centres due to many years spent making coffees for pensioners and dishing out lo-fat soft-serve to bogans.
that's honestly why i came to london.

i got bored with amsterdam. and it's good to broaden your horizon. learn more, grow more as a person.
anyways, vespa, nah i'm not pissed at all, it's just that when i see quotes with god in it i immediately have to think of jehova witnesses who ring the doorbel on sunday at 8 am.
and yes, you got to have faith, but in yourself that is. it's not like there's this power out there who controls everything no matter what you do.
everything what you are, what you do and where you are is due to you and not some abstract entity. so you don't really have to thank god for it, just thank yourself.

sometimes i feel so lucky (compared to so many people in the world) it seems incredibly arrogant to "just thank myself"

I was a young buck straight out of college and went into the US Peace Corps. Stayed in South West Africa (Namibia) for 2.5 years and worked as a Secondary Education Teacher under the Cambridge (UK) School System. Stayed another 1.5 years working for UNESCO as a Geoscientist/explorationist (more like baby sitter) for a mine pulling out Tantallite. Travelled back and forth to South Africa quite often, Cape Town and the costal towns along the wine route. Much fun all together and you learn a lot. Met some crazy cats in Namibia, one of whom was a Sri Lankan telecommunications programmer working for Deutsch Telekom in Namibia (former German Colony, blah, blah), he got another IBM contracting position with Telia of Sweden in Helsinki, Finland. Got to go there and work for 6 months as a web/technical writer contractor as well. Bounced around the EU doing little things. Much fun. All in all a good time.
Honestly, if you are looking for a job in another country, you are going to either have to be working through some approved agency (work permit), or have the right to work there through marriage, etc. It's not that easy, but once you get in you can work your way around.

why i came to london, or what i did on my summer vacation
by paraselene
i had been living abroad (spain, mexico, honduras, cuba, london) thanks to many research grants and the kindness of strangers.
i eventually had to return to the states. shit was bad there and it made me feel uncomfortable, so i set about finding a job abroad. this was the first one that came along. it's a year next wednesday since i've been here and i couldn't be happier about the move. it's nice to be legal for a change.

f**k me JazX! There was a TV series about you a few years back - I think it was called MacGyver...
- Spix0
well...thats the thing...in order to get approved for visa that is not based upon my marriage i need to be in good status...my company wants to sponosor me, but since immigration takes a while, i more likely will be in a bad status about the time for the new visa, cause my intervju is comming up soon.

what is so arrogant about thanking yourself vespa? because you were not born in a poor country? or that you were not born in a trailerpark? you did make your own choices right? aren't you glad you made those? or proud in what you've reached / done? i don't see the arrogance in that.
