  do you have to do anything special to the file in quark in order for it to open in indesign?

  one worked but another won't. even if i export it as a .pdf

  found the answer:

  As for Quark files, InDesign can open Quark files saved as Quark 4, but not 5 or 6.

  Yes, just make sure you do a quick check throughout the entire document. Opening a Quark file in InDesign tends to make copy shift.

  only problem is quark won't save lower than version 5

  at least the quark i have access to
