it's when the first fleet arrived at Botany Bay in 1788 > The beginning of White settlement on the continent. To most Aboriginals it marks the beginning of The Invasion. I prefer Anzac day anyway more of a drinking holiday.

You know that the states Victoria and New South Wales had their Australia Day public holidays on different days a few years back cos some of them wanted to make it into a long weekend... I guess the long weekend is a stronger Oz national tradition than having everyone celebrate on the same day...
