So, shouldn't you bill a client for travel since you are taking time out of your personal life to work for them?

sounds like something that should be worked out in advance.
typically, if i leave the office to meet a client at their location they are billed from the time i leave until i return.

if i think about a project, even briefly, during lunch i charge the client for that lunch... usually once i realize that the lunch is billable i start drinking beers. Not the beers on special either. i'm talking the good shit.

I make a few exceptions for my special clients, the ones that feed me work occasionally and that I know will always come to me again and again.
But my general rule is that I always charge when I devote time for a client, be it on the way to the client, on the way *from* the client or if I'm having meetings with some marketing douchebag. It doesn't matter.
