yep...i have a very old jade chinese pendant with a swastika. it symbolizes many things in many cultures.
the sex pistols did that for the same reason that they sang "god save the queen"...

spiral shapes like the swastika have been popular in every culture in any given time. the swastika itself is a greek symbol standing for hope if i'm not mistaken. you can still see it in a lot of old iron work in greece but also on some bridges in the us. there's actually a book containing a lot of swastikas worldwide in places you wouldn't expect and which has nothing to with the nazi abuse of the symbol. the other way around it's the japanese symbol for sun (also if i'm not mistaken).
anyways, as far as i understand, the use of the swastika in england is more a sign of rebellion, or really being a loud punk, a sort of fascination of the impact of the symbol or just because it's so political incorrect to use it it becomes interesting to actually flaunt it. it really has nothing to do with fascism.

forgot the answer your question thed. back in those days for punks it was fashionable to flaunt swastikas because it was just shocking. that's prolly the only reason. shockvalue.

In the mid-late 70's a lot of artists and thinkers were trying to "take back" nazi symbolism since it was appropriated from other pieces of history and culture(s)
Anselm Kiefer went around germany photographing himself doin the nazi salute ( which was the roman salute )
David Bowie ( may have done the same thing at a concert )
just a few examples

all nazi symbolism was hijacked from other cultures. i believe the ss signs where runes. i think at one point it will return to it's normal state. maybe. but i'm not gonna be around to experience that. it's gonna take a couple of generations at least.

reid didn't really used it a lot. it was more malcom mc laren who was kinda obsessed with it.
