my external hard drive died. i was editing raw video files so they gave me this external hard drive. i ran out of space on my internal hard drive so put some sites on the external hard drive and now windows don't recognize it and it's making clicking sounds.

shit.
I need to get a dvd burner in case this happens to my external hd

if the drive itself is making clicking noises, then all that's left is to give it a proper burial.
you can try to put it in the freezer, but i think that's just a myth.
when a drive physically crashes, it crashes. you can take it to a recovery service and pay tons of cash to have the platters recovered.
it is my firm opinion that external harddrives are no replacement for a sound network attached storage server. at least a nas box can give you raid arrays for recovery.

yeah, it really all depends on how badly you need the stuff inside. You can always get it back if you REALLY REALLY need it.

i wish i could just put a pin to the actual disc and spin it and it would play like a vinyl

rub some dirt on it and tell it to get back to work

you can always try to pull the platters yourself.
:)
i've done emergency "open-heart" drive surgery before.
it sucks.

what they usually do in data recovery places is they get a harddrive that's identical to teh broken one and just replace magnetic disk from one to the other, that's something they'll charge you an arm and a leg for and also something that you can try doing yourself, but thats only if you REAALLLY need the stuff.
