i've never photographed people with this dark of skin before. i'm just wondering if anyone has any tips on lighting (i'll be using natural light and a flash), maybe some light color filters that help define the color (i'm shooting color though, so very light color filters)... ya know, just things that aren't part of general photography that might be good for me to know. Also, does anyone remember what rating black people's skin has on the exposure rating scale? i doubt i'll meter off the skin, but just in case...
thanks!

- tuig0
sounds stupid, but mail carty,i see has used alot of black models....
- abstrakt0
yeah i was hoping he'd respond in this thread. i'll wait a bit and then maybe e-mail

try to sligthly overexpose the skin.
- abstrakt0
ok thanks. and with a flash, is black skin more reflective? like is a flash hotspot something i'll need to worry about?

i think the key is, make sure they smile... this is quite possibly the most ignorant thread title i've ever heard.
its like i have no friends of colour so i have no idea if they even show up on film...
if this guy could come somehow with a less ignorant way to address such exposure issues, i'd be happy to help.
i should start the "how to photograph white people" thread.
fuck. i thought it was 2004. [for those that think im overreacting... i am...lol]

racist
:P

great thread.
"mabye carty will know what to do?"
cheers.

oh my,
what a stange / funny way of wording things.

dark skin absorbs the light, not reflect it like white skin. do some test with the aperture settings.
- abstrakt0
how in the hell are you calling me racist for this thread? my stepdad took a photography class and brought home papers on how to photograph white, mexican, and black people. is the instructor racist too then? i've never used a black model for photography and i'd like some advice because because it seems like it might be tough to get the skin exposed properly. i guess i can forget any advice from Carty, he obviously has some issues.
- abstrakt0
thanks digitaldiva. that's the advice i'm looking for.
- abstrakt0
look, i realize "photographing darker skinned people" would have been a better topic since not all black people have the same color of skin, but in no way was the topic meant to be racist. and i still don't see how it is unless you're super sensitive about that type of thing. maybe i'm just naive... sorry if i offended anyone

MJ had it right!
it doesn't matter if you're black or white.

according to ur meter reading defined on an 18% grey reflection ur exposure will be correct for caucasian skin type. darker skin types especially really dark "black" skintypes require a slight overexposure to compensate the lesser reflection of light.
(Take care of your background lighting) An easy way would also be to take reflective readings from both lighter and darker skintypes if you want to try out different apertures. Normally i would say overexpose 2/3 with really dark skins)
Also very important don't forget the fill light (with reflector or fill flash) if u want it natural. This can easily cause problems with darker skin types. //// = my advice nothing more ;)
- abstrakt0
hehe thank you very much dandy :) i'm gonna have to do some experimenting with fill flash. i've never really done a fill flash

if you start out by offending, you can understand why i wouldnt want to help.
its like this guy lives on the moon.
if you know how to expose film, then you should know how to expose all types of skin. if this thread was called skin tones, or even darker skin tones, i would think it was more racially aware than the niave ignorant thread title you chose.
as for me having issues, give me a call when you've experience life as a black person. i'm kinda feeling like a novelty here and your treating your subjects like black plexiglass and not people. its just dry.
but then to broadcast your ignorance to millions... priceless.

i took some pictures of my uncle (he is very black) once outside his garden one night we were drinking some beers ..
we had a blast when i picked them up from Shoppers Drugmart a week after ..
30 photos of his eyes and teeth ..hahahaha...so remember Flash!
sorry for the no advise but i just remember how funny it was ... atleast for us anyway

photographing darker skin toned people.
so really the offense her is using the word black instead of darker skin toned.
right?
