so my idiot client registered his domain 5 years ago and cant remember with who, and now he wants to change his hosting. i need to change the NS on his registrar but no idea who it is, and a whois is not helping, just displays current NS and contact info. does anyone know how to find where a domain was registered?

whois should tell you that

If he can remember who his hosting service was at the time, they should know who their registar was.
ps. Im on my fifth day waiting for Melbourn IT to release my freaking DNS so I can modify the NS. f-them. It's mine. ...For now I am just a lonely numeric IP. I feel so dirty...

if you have access to a bash shell in a linux box, then you can try nslookup or dig on the domain name.
that will give you a little more information.
if you need help, just email me.
