don't know man. i've seen a bunch lately.
i just redesigned my site a week ago and have gone through a couple revisions and finally came to something i really like.
my first try was to have a wood background, rough worn texture and look, use browns and blues, and blah blah not only was it a bit overdone, imo, but also that just wasn't my style.
if it's your style, bust it out. to get the wood you want maybe take a photo at menards or something.

just work around the cliché and improve it. you want a wooden bg. what's the problem with that? just find a way of not putting ALL the other clichés around wooden bg's...
art goes like that. nothing's new. you wanna paint a portrait. everybody has painted one already. just paint it a new way.

I agree

just stay away from oak, cherry, and maple... now that's cliché.
try a nice tropical wood like koa. or maybe go with a nice mahogany. they both look great and are less common than the above. they also stand up to weather wonderfully...

go to a lumber yard and ask for them to cut a piece at 800 x 600 pixels.

you could always use a 3D tool and make synthetic wood, that might look more unique or import that type of thing into Illy and tweak the crap out of it.

Try istock... it's cheap... and good.

hey, great idea... maybe instead of stock photo (they all look alike) you could pull a stunt like that. put your scanner in the sawing machine and let him feed PS for the last time, with honour. Like a real scan :)
- JazX0
the stock photos I posted don't all look alike. check them, plus there are about 20 more like that ;)

true true. they're really nice and lo!, original ones. i didn't perused your post thouroughly ;)
- JazX0
not bad, but I know what you mean. those blue wooded ones would be more unique. You could take a piece of plywood and actually paint it and get something maybe?

dry rot is gonna be huge in '05.

why don't you just tape a piece of wood to your monitor and design on that?!?
worked for me.

i shot an email to yer yahoo in the profile...
wasn't anything important though... just curiousity.
