I dunno if it's inappropriate to ask here or not, but I've been asked to bid on a website design (HTML, approx 17 pages, 55 images). I'm trying to find out what other web designers generally charge as I don't want to screw either myself or the client. I was thinking $3000, what do you think?

17 unique pages, and 55 images?
Is it a catalog or something?
Sounds more like a 4-5K job to me.

how many hours will it take you?
muliply hours by rate + a lil buffer = price
if youre new to this and your client doesnt have much money, i would charge 20 bucks an hour and add an extra 500 bucks for the trouble/phonecalls/revisions and headache.
as you go, your retainer/buffer you add on and your hourly will go up. many designers in LA easily charge 45-60 bucks an hour but they have some heavy duty portfolios to ask for that kind of hourly. i often add a couple grand on top of my hourly and the time i estimate... cos as always clients are crazy -- and it's easy to grind your teeth and keep going when you know you're getting an extra 2gs.
but dont be too crazy with pricing until you feel confortable and the client would feel like theyre getting their money's worth.

thanks for the feedback...I've designed several websites before (cornell university's architecture program, and several NYC businesses) as freelance projcts but I always feel like I'm undervaluing myself...I don't have friends that do web design, so I'm not sure what to compare myself too...so it's good to hear what other designers are charging...
