I'm upgrading and currently looking to buy 2 monitors (dual monitor). what do you guys suggest. brands? and what do i need to look for? I do mostly web and print graphics. and dont think i could go less than 19"....and at fairly reasonable price...
any thoughts would be appreciated...thanks!

You're being sarcastic, right?
CRT.

CRT = better color.
But I can't stand looking into a CRT all day. So I propose that you buy one LCD and one CRT. Use the CRT as a secondary monitor to check colors at intervals. But use the LCD more often or as main monitor to reduce eye strain, save energy etc.

dcdomain, you just need to take the OSHA recommended steps for prolonged computer exposure to your eyes.
I think it's a 15 minute rest from the computer every two hours.Get up, walk around, go sit on the toilet if you have nowhere else to go.

CRT, unless you spend a lot of money you won't get a good LCD.

I have one of each, I only use my LCD for surfing the web and typing in code. Anything with color and I use the CRT.

I have View Sonic LCDs at work and they aren't the best for design. Just got a new 20" Apple display for home and I'm glad I went with Apple, rather than something cheaper because it looks awesome.

CRT: Sony Artisan is basically the top of line for colour accuracy. However, some people swear by their Lacie Diamondtrons...
Also: NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141sb is a consideration and more affordable.
LCD: Eizo ColorEdge CG18 if you're really rich. Or get yourself a pink hued Apple Display which uses an LG Display similar to a certain HP LCD.
Also: LaCie 32 or certain Formac LCDs. Formac i know nothing about.
CRTs are still hands down better in quality...and more versatile that lcd. However, LCD is the way of the future guaranteed. but it's not the future, it's now.
Also consider that even if you get an lcd to "reduce" desktop space are you really making more space or just more space BEHIND the monitor?

"really making more space or just more space BEHIND the monitor?"
EXACTLY!

Personally, I'm extremely upset that Sony paired their CRT offerings down to ONE model.
They made the best CRTs by leaps and bounds.
I have a 8 year old Sony CRT that looks better than a lot of new ones.

Apple 20" LCD created a ton of new wokspace IN FRONT of my display... i now have the option to fully extend my arms to type, and probably got my face an extra 8-10" away from the screen, for which my eyes are very greatful.
all depends on your desk setup i guess.
and for the record that pink issue was only with the Apple 23".. not sure if its been resolved yet. color on the 20" is superb.

CRT all the way.
LCD is s*hit for web designer, printing (color adjustement) and some PC games.
Too much bright, too much white... bad black vs grey rendering... what you see is NOT what you get on CRT so its s*hit for webdesign.

but if most people are heading towards LCD as their monitor, shouldn't you do interface design on that display to contend with that spec?
just a thought...
- benfal990
not really.
first most people still on CRT.
and many "designer" forget that we do design for the other, for the masse, not for other designer.

I'm doing not so much design, more online magazine production and lots of photo processing.. love LCD (Lacie photon20vision) for the precision (can see each pixel of 1-pixel borders clearly), and color seems fine (maybe I'm color blind?)

i just got this lcd monitor

No more tubes! Love my Apple 22", the other thing is just sitting there collecting dust

You can get this dell 20" LCD for about $600 each. The reviews sound good and it's a great bang for the buck!

thanks for everyone that replied!
the only thing i dont like about CRT monitors is the flicker...or maybe my monitors are ancient.
anyone knows about lifespan of LCD's?
- dcdomain0
"LCDs have a life-span of around 50,000 to 60,000 hours, which equates to at least five years of 24/7 use. So if you're watching six hours per day, it'll be 28 years before its brightness begins to fade to half its original level. "

As for the eye fatigue issue, I take frequent breaks from the monitor, more than 15 minutes per two hours, and yet my eyes are still sore.
Unless I'm color correcting or doing pre-press work, I'm on my LCD.

GET AN LCD. Forget what everyone is saying about LCD's not being good for designing. I use dual Sony LCDs and at work everyone uses them too. If you have a good one, you can color correct and calibrate the monitor to look very good for design. They use half the energy a CRT uses which will save you big bucks on the electric bill. Plus, they give off almost no radiation which is best for your health.
... and use less room. :)
