Is there a sensible way to convert a set of CMYK values to the equivalent PMS spot color?
- rasko40
you get one of those cmyk value grid books and a pantone book and compare.
Otherwise you have to use photoshops guesswork.

panone 4-color process guide?

If Pantone's 'Solid to Process' feels to 1998:

yeah, the process to spot is probably the best way to find the PMS.
Someone should write a program that would allow you to enter CMYK values and it would output the nearest PMS matches...
- ribit0
the Photoshop color picker doesnt do that properly? or is it not the right sets?
- BonSeff0
you dont have to match a pantone color. there are people prolly in your area that can mix a custom color. we do it all the time here in dallas with a company called top level
- scottstoel0
In Photoshop sample the color with the eyedropper, go to the Color Picker, slect Custom, and select the type of Pantone you need ans Photoshop will show you the closest one. Hopefully it's close enough to your color it will work.

cool haven't tried in photoshop yet.
I should have started off with this but, I just got this book

As I was standing in line to purchase,
it dawned on me that I might not be able to take the CMYK values listed and transfer over to a spot. And then I was like aww fuck it, I'm in line already.
- BonSeff0
so are you gonna get a custom color mixed or what
- thompson0
i guess so. what shall it be?
I've never asked for that. Can any offset printer take a CMYK color and mix for a spot?
- BonSeff0
i dunno about any offset printer but i can put you in touch with top level. weve twealed many spots to out liking. they are the shit
- BonSeff0
btw, it doesnt cost more to have a custom ink made, these guys mix the pantone inks as well.
- thompson0
interesting...I will look into this.

Nobody use Art Director's Toolikit? It comes bundled with OS X, check your applications folder. It allows you to enter colour values and it provides you with a range of Pantones that match closest.
Works like this: Click on the 'Swatches' tab, go to 'Find: Show Range of Colors', click on the colour icon, enter your values (RGB, CMYK, HSB etc), click OK.
- patnoodle0
Oh, and it's available for Windows too.
- BonSeff0
no luck on the red stuff. maybe try a place like fastsigns or something like that.
