Light meters?

  Ok, so photo question of the hour for all you out there.

  I got a really old film camera recently and it has no light meter... which to be expected... but i must admit that i am young enough that a light meter has always been built into every camera i've ever owned soooo...

  Any recommendations?

  I will mostly be using it outdoors and i doubt very highly that i'll be able to get close to my subjects (i do a lot of street photography).

  I have an old cheapo self powered one, but it doesn't do a very good job. Could be i'm using it wrong... i do not rule that out... but any suggestions would be appreciated.
