Thinking of buying after effects for mac, but wasn't sure if anyone knows if it will be discontinued in the near future since motion just came out. I know premiere was discontinued for mac once final cut came out. Didn't want to buy after effects and then be without support if it is discontinued. Any opinions? Thanks!

Good question.
I know Motion isn't up to par with AE.....yet

Id be suprised if they stopped making it for Mac. Why would they do that?

after effects owns motion, but if they keep working on it like they did with Final Cut Pro this could well turn around.

Yea Motion isn't even close to being an AE killer. I wouldn't worry to much just yet.

apple would love for you to believe that

yeah, don't ask your local apple store

adobe make far too much money out of AE on the mac to kill it.
No one was using premiere on the mac (as it was shite) hence it's timely death.
I can't remember the figures but I am pretty certain mac users of AE outnumber PC users of it by 3 (or 2) to 1.

i dont think motion is even a direct competitor with after effects.. and its crap. Combustion 3, however, is.. and its better.. and more fun, and handles two monitors like a pimp, and supports all AE plugins.. and discreet isnt going to discontinue anything anytime soon.

combustion is a hassle for motion graphics, great for compositing

I would have to agree Motion and AE really don't serve the same function, and thus AE's wide customer base on the Mac shouldn't be concerned.
Discreet should worry however, as Motion gets its UI a bit more under control, and expands its behavior capabilities it will become more and more a competitor to Combustion.

There is NO WAY Motion is going to kick AE off the Mac. AE is the best Adobe product and Premiere is/was it's worst (next to Acrobat maybe). Motion doesn't even support vectors from what I hear. It's a version 1 program. Combustion has some nice particle effects, but can you just import a layered psd or ai and start animating?

actually motion does support vector, there is a plugin that gives you complete illustrator support. its neato, give it a whirl... http://www.ampede.com/layerlink/…

Thanks, Spiiflink. I just installed Motion on my Mac at work yesterday. We got the whole Motion Graphics package from Apple.

yea what they said- go for after effects. make sure its AE PRO. not the other half assed versions

exactly, AE Pro is all you need. Motion takes up tons of space, you need a G5 to run it and no 3D capabilities? I'm not even considering it right now.
