I have to install a new battery because (big surprise) my old one only lasts about 45 minutes before dying, and that's less than the 4.5 hours advertised.
I'm assuming the computer has to be shut down. Anything else I need to know?

No need to shutdown... Just put it to sleep (close the lid), swap battery, wake up.
What model? On older G3's you can swap without sleeping (if you use both laft and right bays for a battery).
The battery life on my old G3 dropped to 20 minutes after 2 years... Apple replaced it for me (Applecare)

It's the oldest 17" titanium Powerbook. Minime version 1 gigahertz processor. It's a year and a half old and I'm getting about 45 minutes WITH the screen dimmed half way down. I bought a used battery for $65 at the Apple Store.

on a powerbook, if it is running on AC you should be able to take the battery out and put another one in...
you can on my aluminum 15"...

hmmm... if you have a busted battery, why would you buy a used? i mean.. isn't is just bad battery swap?

The used batteries are usually returned because someone ordered the wrong one. I only need it to take with me on the bus in the morning and not have it run out before my trip is over.

- myobie0
if u install ram, pull the battery and unplug that mess...

There is no 17" titanium....you have an aluminum....and some powerbooks used torx but most now have small jeweler philips.
