i was going to go with toshiba but the 17inch monitor with the dell9200 is a big draw

i've heard good things about fujitsu's. hp has a 17 widescreen high-def notebook too.

Get the Dell. It's far cheaper than an Apple than an Apple, what, like 30% cheaper??
Standard, all of the components are faster or better, graphics, hard drive, screen, etc.
Apples are still pretty, but you have to sacrifice everything for it.It's not light, but at 8 lbs is one of the lightest 17 inchers. Read the new PC Mag article, it beat everything.
I think I'll be getting one soon, too.

I have the Fujitsu LifeBook N5010. 3.2ghz w/ hyper-threading, 1gig ram, dvd writer, 16.1" screen, 1400x1050 resolution, onboard wireless, true dual monitor support (not just splitting one card)... it's 9 pounds, but it's a desktop replacement. i have to say, it's a really nice computer. if you're looking for portability, this isn't the one you want.
sorry to say, but Apple's laptops suck as far as quality. My friend has had to take hers in like 4 times (the mousepad keeps falling out and other misc problems) another friends screen is all screwed up cause apple didn't think their keys just might touch the screen surface, anotehr friends paint is all chipping off... anyways, apple has good desktops, but as far as laptops... no way.

it's all opinion of course.

ask some of the 3d kids about either Boxx, alienware... orrrrr...
Sager.
I'm not kidding, I'm hooking up a sager this week.
256meg vid card, 3.6 pIV, 2 gig of Ram, 8+DVD R/RW, 17"display etc etc... Just under $3500.
That may sound expensive, but you can't MATCH that power w/any other machine that's portable.

mmmm ibm thinkpad....

i had already looked at most other companies. cost is a major factor (just finishing my masters and haven't worked much in a year) and this new 9200D Dell seemed alright for the cost.
anywayz my other question was do Dell normally do any pre/post christmas specials?
i can get an alright 'double memory/freedelivery/€70 off deal' but only for the next few days. don't know whether to wait till december/jan.
mmmm???

Dell's promotional things are hit or miss.
I think the most important thing is the promotion code. They have it on sites like : http://www.techbargains.com/
and elsewhere.Email me if you want the promo code that is printed in this months PCMag.

This might help:

You can save $450 on the 9200 if you buy it today. I went through the checkout and it works, although it just takes $250 more off than the 'sale' on now. Still a good deal, though.

get a Sager form a reseller. pctorque.com or powernotebooks.com

I have the Dell 8600 - they are heavy but if you're looking to replace your desktop, you're not going to move it around too much are you? You get a lot for your buck with a dell - my 8600 has been a rock stable pc. I always use an external monitor with mine and stretch my desktop across both monitors so no need for the 17inch in my opinion.

thanks for the replies.
re. sager. I don't want to imagine what the shipping costs to ireland would be and don't fancy transnational customer support :)
but I put together a similar spec spec to what I wanted for the Dell9200 (sagen didn't offer centrino chip and had slower hard-drive) and it cost $985.35 more. :/
- abizzyman0
hey low...
from what I read about the centrino... it's pretty slow and is only good for sitting at coffee shops and sending PM's to your mom. :)
Seriously... if you're doing graphic work... the centrino chip scares me.
