I start a new job in a few weeks. It’s a real good company, ( in House work but still a good move)
I’ll be producing work between print and Web/multi media, but sounds like it will be concentrating mainly on the web. They have asked me to make a list of things I’ll need before I start, hardware/ software. The only choice I really need to make is, 'do I get a Mac or PC?'
What you guys think?

I would opt for a mac. It seems to me that mac browsers are the most tempermental when it comes to rendering HTML/CSS. While MSIE for windows is consitant and the most commonly used PC browser. Also, with a mac you can run Virtual PC for testing and bebugging.
Besides, as a designer, you have to support th folks at Apple in CA. Right?

go for a mac and try them to get a cheap pc for testing.

haha yeah.
I use a G5 in my current Job anyway. Is this Virtual PC any good?
Should I get a top spec mac? or is that pushing my luck.

The role involves me doing all Graphic Design and Web based, also working with a 3D Designer who'll be starting with me.
Team of 2. Macs work well with PC's based on 3d applications?

Virtual PC s balls slow. But, i gets the job done.
If you don't ask you don't get.

Ask for both... get a G5 to do you design work and a cheapy Dell under the desk with a switchbox connected to your monitor to switch between PC and Mac...
Best of both world is a good thing.

the question is : what do u use .. i mean..? common sense.. wil you work on PC if u're used to MAc s and u have the choice !! ?
- enjine0
Of course, there's only one answer to this question: both.

The don't make VPC for the G5

Hell just get a 20inch Imac with 1 gig of ram. It is a G5 and you most likely will never use the power of 2 G5s... most of the time its only 1 you are using.
Then you will get a nice 20inch flat panel monitor and a G5 with 160 gig hd and dvd burner etc.
And get the logitech mx1000
and throw in Bluetooth and a bluetooth keyboard

VPC 7 just came out and it DOES run on a G5 also its much faster than the previous one.
- Bullitt0
just get a 20 imch Imac? you serious?
- Dr_Jay0
Yeah... Both is the best answer.
A decent G5 Mac and a cheap PC (doesn't need to be more than $500)... Plus 2 monitors... 2 for the mac & have 1 switchable to the pc. 3+ monitors if you think you can get 'em.

20" G5 iMac and VPC 7.
Yes VPC runs on the G5.
You're testing Web sites, not software, so even if VPC seems a little slow compared to a stand-alone system (like a shitty Dell), it doesn't really matter.

I would ask for both so you can do cross-platform testing.

Whats the big deal about this G5 Imac?

a 3d designer? You mean a industrial designer, an architect that uses z-form, or a 3d modeler? What the heck does that have to do with web or print?
"macs work best with pc based on 3d apps?"-that is way to open ended, there are dozens and really a non-issue.
I sorta question this whole post :) Have u ever done web design? of course you need a pc for testing!
Surely you have a development staff, you , the guys that do the databases and coding? They all use PCs, use theirs for testing.
