who has exp setting these up for clients?
I'm looking for the most painless way to set up a template that can be altered monthly by the client.

I've done a few. If it's just text editing a template, and no database on the site...easist way I found is HTML file on server and give them Macromedia Contribute.

what are you using to send outlook? outlook express? another app?

Hmmm. I use stylesheets, dreamweaver to build, and a third party app (worldmere at first, Campaign (SP?) Desktop later) to handle the sending. Worldmerege is good if you are working from excel mail lists, but its PC only. Coupla questions:
1. How many people on the list - 100's or 1000's?
2. Is it essential that EVERYBODY on teh list view the mail correctly?Y about contribute as well thought, its the dogs =)

...dunno about the sending bit, I just do the design bit. As said above keep it simple (tables & tags, no rollovers, no js etc.) works well for me.

Limiting Internet Access
Is it possible to have a site connected to the internet and just have it's users ONLY have access to that site and not other site?

You can use inline styles, just no separate style sheets. Many email servers have restrictions on CSS files or any thing with a tag.
Do it like this:
blah
Also, ConstantContact http://www.constantcontact.com has an excellent email marketing manager, that allows you to use templates, or create your own. Great stat reporting too. Interland offers it for free with it's Shared Server accounts.

Oops, forgot that code doesn't show up:
p style="color:red; font-size:10px;"

these email newsletter merchants are pricey.
with a bit of asp knowledge you could build your own, or customise cheaper options.

Thanks for the CSS tip. I was just about to cut loose an HTML email template for a client and it uses external CSS. Had no idea some servers reject .css linkages.
Thanks, F-18 you saved me some embarrassment...but now time recode some pages...

The best solution is to set up an online backend *directory* where you place the HTML file and link it up to an editor like HTMLAREA (google: HTMLAREA)
Then make an online mailingapp/system where you can put in users and thats gernerates an list. Link that up to the HTML file and send it away to the users.
You can find mailingscripts and shit on http://www.phpfreakz.nl
Good luck man!

CampaignMonitor is great - been using them for years.
https://www.campaignmonitor.com
It has everything...templates, client support, etc. Best part about it - you can set it up to charge extra for each email per client, so you make money reselling it.

Mailchimp and Vertical Response have worked well for me.

i design/code them all the time. most are deployed from services like silverpop, marketo, pardot, (soon i'll be doing some on bronto). I've been doing a lot for the last year+ that are responsive and works just about everywhere except for freaking gmail app on android (though it displays the desktop version fine).

Mailchimp and Campaign Monitor are incredibly easy to set up editable templates.
