ta settled for a cd and tab with some ben e king, hendrix, traci chapman, aretha franklin, easy beatles, bob marley.
and some white stripes.she's more of a souley, funk, hip-hop, alternative (broken beats) kinda chick, so that direction probably suits better. i may subject her to some old slayer tunes just to get a reaction mind... ;)

what? blackbird is a great first song to learn. It's more complicated and takes longer to learn but once you have that down, you're good to go.

My daughter is taking lessons... she's 10. Her teacher started her off with :leaving on a jetplane, happy birthday, walk away by ben harper, "who will save your soul" by jewel.
Check some guitar tabs sites...
good luck, and have fun

"House of the Rising Sun" was my first song. It's got most all of the basic chords in it and the changes are easy.

What kind of music does your gf like? It's much easier to learn a song if you like it and actually want to learn it. Ask her what she wants to learn.
However if she says "I want to learn some Alan Holdsworth" and you think it may be a tad advanced then Beatles songs are good for learning all the open chords and everyone on the planet knows how they go.

And remember the sign from the guitar shop in "Wayne's World":
"NO Stairway To Heaven!"
