Ok, I've been doing mostly corporate related design work for the past few yrs and I want to make a change into the entertainment industry. My problem is that my folio doesn't reflect anything for the studios that I am trying to work for. Do I have to apply as an intern to build some cred? Err....any advice before I have to whore myself to get in the door? Thanks.

I reckon your best bet would be to actually speak and present your work to someone in the company you want to work for, rather than just sending out emails and hoping for a respoinse.
You are going to need to draw parallels in thnking between the work you did and the sector you want to move into. But that shouldn't be hard, pitching yourself on ideas, branding and communication will mean you cross sectors rather than being defined by them.
And the best way would be to pitch yourself that way yo potential employers rather than hoping that a single sided letter and CV will do the trick.

a good question to ask too, BTW

Thanks for the tip Bottlerocket. I was thinking about creating comps of make believe movies and title treatments and other related design aspects of working in the ent. industry and then presenting my comps as examples of my potential I guess. If anyone else has some other ideas, please let me know. Thanks all.

i got a good job working for sony music a few years ago thatt got me in. i tried and tried before that to work in entertainment but it was very hard to get anyone to listen to you.
if youre in college its easy to get internships to get your face out there. but changing over can be difficult. i suggest you start going out and meeting other designers that work in entertainment. go to function s and meet people. friends hook friends up with jobs. thats how it works in LA.

you can also work on some kinda experimental personal projects. play with motion... color... concepts.. etc. thats kinda what you have to do with movies... create a feeling without giving it all away. a lot of studios are allowing for more experimental style sites now that go for more experience than *interface*. if you have a few examples of that to show that could work just as well as a good portfolio peice.

Worked for a company that dealt pretty much exclusively in the entertainment ind. for about 3 years. I found it to be one long buttraping in terms of budgets, deadlines creative clout, blah blah blah. Fashion stuff and luxury brands is where the creamy stuff is; nice budgets, some level of creative control, bigger, more diverse projects, yumyum

So shellie, wanna be my friend? haha, jp. Thanks for the advice. I'm in the process of experimenting with ent related project for demonstration purposes like you said. I guess networking is the tough part.
Thanks all.
