120GB-250GB Firewire drive (cheapest per MB of all external backup methods) and a copy of Retrospect or similar backup software to do scheduled incremental backups.

and get a Lacie drive.. the key thing (according to our last discussion on this) is that they have this cool blue light on the front.

I have a Maxtor external 250 gig drive 7200rpm. It's been fast and reliable, and I can almost fit two computer worth on it.
It's Firewire AND USB 2, where I believe the lacie drives are one or the other. I just saw one in Office Depot for $280, but you may be able to get one cheaper online.

I was driving a friends VW Golf the other day and all the instrumentation is backlit in a trance inducing blue/indigo glow. mmmmmmm
