Hi Folks,
Did this site in flash, www.dpart.ie and its live and tested and works ok as far as i can see but the client got some emails saying that people were having problems with it. Apart from not having the flash plugin, I cant see a problem.Anyone care to have a gander and tell me if there's anything wrong?
Cheers people.

no problem here. exept a strange character on "today's" under "new&updates"

no problems on my end... I think the client made up the e-mails so they could get free work. I mean how logical ... right guys? ... heh guys?

one comment though, being able to press the news & updates button is initially quite confusing since one already is there. so nothing happens if you click on it. maybe that's the reason why they think it doesn't work proper.

god it's fast enough, images are instant.
just the pixel fonts could be better, they are coming up a bit blurred, especially the capital letters.
there's another thread here on pixel fonts, some of the examples are really sharp.

Works fine for me (OSX 10.3.5 / Safari 1.2 / Flash 7).
Don't you know what the 'problems' were? Might be an idea to fiind out.

Well, most of the problems are plugin related, one problem came from someone not wanting to download flash player cos they didnt want to give over their credit card details.
Another said they couldnt view it even though they had the plugin but every time they went on the site they were sent to the 'noflash' page after the script reads they dont have the plugin...
one worry was someone clicked on the contact page and nothing came up. All the pages are either txt files or swf movies externally loaded. It worked ok for me so I dont see why this should happen. Any thoughts?

The noflash page is a bit heavy, makes it look like you need to download 2 plugins and a browser to view the site. A bit off-putting.
Drop the Acrobat link or add a download plugin link where there's an Acrobat file, and lose the browser requirements.
Also it wrongly identified my browser as Netscape.

Yeah contra, I think I'll have to do something with that page, as it stands its a bit of a quick fix, due to the deadline.
Dammit, I talked my boss into letting me use flash on this project and now he laughs when I tell him the problems.
Ah well.

you can use a browser sniffer but don't autom. redirect to a non flash page. no browser sniffer is 100% perfect. just give them an option to go a non flash page or not or continue. i'm so often redirected to a page because my browser doesn't support flash which is pure shite.
if a remote .txt file isn't loaded it could be that you don't give it enough time to load (depends what flash version you're working in). that is if you load it over various frames.

Point taken rabattski, Ill go for a splash page instead.
Im using MX, loading the files into a text field in an MC on one frame per text file ie on one frame it loads txt01, on the next frame txt02 etc. This is the first site Ive built purely in flash so it was the only thing I could think of in the time. If theres a better way, Im all ears!

or a redirect where it says if you're sure you have flash yadda yadda click here yadda.
depends on the actual as you use to load remote txt. could very well be you don't give it enough time to load (people with slow connections won't get the txt). again, depends on the as, if you loop it untill it's loaded or not or if it's just a simple load command without any check if it's actually loaded or not.

Its just a load action, how do I check to see if the text file is loaded?
