What would you say are the best/ easiest to understand php books for beginners that are out there today?
or is it better to do tuturails on the web and where can I find them?

i found http://www.phpfreaks.com/ brilliant when i was first learning, and its still a great bookmark now i know what i'm doing.
best book/books are always o'reilly. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido… i use this as my reference now, but its also good to get you started.

If you're a design looking to do basic task-driven PHP and MySQL, get this book by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido… The book will teach you basic things like how to make a form, submit to a mysql database, do a basic shopping cart, etc.
Otherwise, if you are actually interested in learning a programming language, the O'Reilly books are always the way to go.

Despite having written a couple of PHP books, I should note that I learned most of what I know from the base documentation.
