Perhaps this has been posted here before, but I couldn't find any good answers...just wondering..freelancers, those who have found good work and are making good $$ doing work for reputable firms, how did you find your work? Cold call? Websites? Networking? Just curious!

been freelancing for nearly a month now, got a pretty steady break through a friend, a project through a previous client from my ex work and got called up (today) by another ex work client, gotta see them on Tuesday to see whats going on... other than that I plan to speak to some recruitment agencies but I'd rather not give them a cut..

it's all about networking... even a little shitty job can lead to a big client. you never know who your clients know and will recommend you to. most freelancers that are making the good money are the ones that have been doing it for awhile and have managed to build up a lot of good relationships.
patience and perserverance!

i tried freelancing in hopes to quit my job and be independent. but all my clients were shitty and referred me to more shittiness. so i gave up on that. glad to hear you guys are making it work though
nice going

What I've found is...the uncertainty of not being able to find work is pretty stressful. But I've been lucky in that I have some clients who give me pretty much constant work, so I can pay the bills while working remotely and search for more contacts. Still need to find better, more interesting work, though...

I've found that networking is the best way.. Surprisingly I've found friendster to be extremely useful in this regard.. I have met two freelance Consultants through that and after meeting them a couple of times, we are now business partners so they basically go out and get the jobs, I do the work.. works great for me.. and then the rest of the work comes from existing clients and their recommendations.. so basically once you get started offf, as long as your work is up to standard and you do as much as you can to make your clients happy to begin with they hwill have no hesitiation in recommending you to their own business partners or friends/family etc etc.. Networking is the king here in my experience..

nema - i need a hookup like that. well actually i have 2 that are somewhat like that, but one hasnt produced any paying work to date, and the other is doing a shift from design to market strategy, so there is less and less work... frustrating now that i want to get going in freelance full time, and have no reliable worksources at the moment

hey function... I just did a search in the gallery for multimedia, web design, IT, etc etc .. most people have their workplace or their interests and so you can find relevant people that way.. I only got 41 friends but that in turn through all their friends links me to over 400,000 people.. send me an email and I'll add you to my network..

Just build up your reel, do shit for free. Then give up on your dreams. And go to grad school.

Anyone here have experience with Aquent? I am thinking of applying with them...
- ozhanlion0
what is thaT?
- talltyler0
aquent, is more difficult to get into then some of the other head hunters but when it comes down to it all of them have work, some times it is good other times they just have a bunch of work that sucks.
- jimeeboy510
I havent tried Aquent yet, but I have done work with the Creative Group (http://www.creativegroup.com). But it seems the same applies here...when its busy, its really busy, and when its slow, its slow, you'll be beggin for more work..hehe. Ain't this fun? BTW, they say the OC, CA office is one of the most requested if you're in this area.

I've been freelancing off and on for about 5 years now and what everyone said is true. It's a combination of networking, having people call you, getting a good showreel together and getting that URL out to everyone and quite honestly, getting drunk with the right people.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is a really good resource called Linkedin.
It's a little more business/VC than design/creative focused but register (it's free) and you'll see what I mean. It's a pretty sick resource for finding new opportunities.
Good Luck!

i met most of my clients at clubs and parties.

linkedin is pretty cool, I'll let you know if it works for me. Right now I'm doing freelance work for trade. I get my hair cut and colored and my portrait painted by a fine artist. Trouble is the hair grows back and I feel like Dorian Grey.
