well, i'm relatively new to newstoday... lurked quite awhile but just signed up / started posting recently.
anyway, i'm a senior graphic design major at the savannah college of art and design. after a recent meeting with mtv internal design people, they said the best way to get a job in 'the industry' is to basically "jump into the fire," move to a big city (nyc, la, san fran, portland) and meet people. they said 75% is who you know, and not what's on your application.
a lot of professionals / people who have jobs seem to visit this site alot, and i just wanted to know their advice; is this what i should do? just pack up for the city? it sounds logical, but, being 21, somewhat frightening.
anyway, thanks.

yes.

yeah.
people say "this is a day and age where you can do it all over the internet", but this is idealistic and retarded nonsense.
this is, of course, if you want to do something glamorous. you can get normal gigs just about anywhere, i imagine.

i didn't move to a larger city, just built my portfolio and changed jobs a lot. it worked out, but certainly took some time.
best of luck and welcome to NT.

do whatever you please personally..
i generally feel a lot better on the countryside.. and it so happens to be that the region where i live in is developing very very rapidly lately, it almost seems the city is coming to me now. :)
love your nic, btw!

what do u do when you are 30 if you are afraid when you are 21?

thanks for the advice so far... i don't necessarily enjoy the city atmosphere, i much prefer the suburban (note: not suburbia, but moderate city) atmosphere of like, seattle... so we'll see what happens. i've got a very strong print portfolio that i've been told can get me about any job i want, but these things frighten me. i hate planning for things in the future, i'm a very in-the-moment person, so anticipating getting a job, things like that, i get very anxious over. but hopefully this time next year i'll be in NYC or something along those lines, we'll see.

Ahh, the big city. That's where I wanted to go. But when I got done with college, I barely had enough one-way gas money to drive my sorry ass back to my Mommy's house...
*waiting for violin...
Fuck it! Just get your ass packing and go where you want. I did what blaw did and just worked at a lot of place and did a lot of freelance and now I'm actually kind of happy where I'm at 6 yrs. later...
BTW, did anyone else get that shitty title of "Jr. Designer" when they got their first job at a design company fresh out of college? I did and I threw all 1000 of those damn business cards in the trash...
